Can an AI Agent Build and Run a Website?

Every tool can generate a page now. The real question is whether an AI agent can build a real website, publish it, and keep running it. On Sitelas, an agent with a single API key gets the same tools as a person: design and publish a site, then read its form submissions and analytics — while a human keeps control of what ships and what costs money.

"Can AI build a website?" stopped being an interesting question about a year ago. Every tool can generate a page from a prompt now. The interesting question is the next one. Can an agent, such as Claude or a coding agent, build a real website, publish it and keep running it, without a person clicking through a dashboard?

On most platforms the answer is "sort of." An agent can write code or trigger a deploy. But what it produces is code somebody still has to own, and nothing runs the site afterwards. Sitelas is built for exactly this. A site isn't a pile of code; it's a live website an agent can create and run through a connector. Here's what that actually means.

Two ways an agent gets in

There are two doors, and they lead to the same room.

Interactive — you, in a Claude chat. You add the Sitelas connector in claude.ai. It is in Claude's connector directory, so it takes one click. Now Claude can work on your site inside the conversation you're already having.

Headless — an agent, with an API key. For an agent that runs on its own, such as Claude Code or your own script, Sitelas gives you a personal API key. You create it in your dashboard's Account tab, and the agent sends it with each request. It gets the exact same tools as the Claude connector: no reduced set, and no "read-only for robots".

The Account tab in the Sitelas dashboard, with the API keys section: "For headless / programmatic access — let an agent or script use your Sitelas MCP server without the interactive sign-in," and a New key button.

Either way, the agent isn't just talking about your website. It can do things to it.

What an agent can build

Give an agent a description and it composes a real site — not a wireframe, not a code dump. Behind the scenes it picks a design that fits the brief, writes the copy, lays out the pages and finds real photographs, not stand-ins.

What comes back is a private preview. And this is the important part: nothing goes live until a human says so. Even when you tell Claude "build it and publish", it builds, shows a preview and asks. It won't put an unreviewed page on your live site.

The site at the top of this post is a real one, built by Sitelas from a brief just like that. The design, type, layout and photographs are all real. An agent produced the whole page from a sentence; the visual editor is there for when you'd rather click than type.

What an agent can run (the part most tools skip)

Building is the easy half now. The half that matters most is day two: the leads, the replies and the edits. Almost no "AI website" tool touches it. Because a Sitelas site is driven by an MCP agent, the same agent that built it can operate it.

In a Claude chat, the user asks about leads and traffic; Claude reads the site's analytics and its form submissions and offers to draft replies.

Ask an agent "any leads this week?" and it reads your form submissions. They land in your Sitelas inbox automatically, with no setup. Ask "how's traffic?" and it pulls your analytics. It can draft replies, publish an update, or restyle the site, all by being asked. Your website becomes an automation endpoint sitting next to your other connectors, the way your Gmail and Calendar already are. That's the thing a Webflow or Squarespace site simply can't be.

Where a human stays in the loop (on purpose)

An agent that can do everything is also a liability, so Sitelas draws the line deliberately:

  • Publishing is a decision, not a default. The agent previews and asks; a human approves what goes live.
  • Money stays human. An agent can't move a site onto a paid plan on its own. Paying is a link a person completes. It builds and runs on the free tier; a human decides to pay.
  • Your domain stays yours. Connecting a custom domain needs DNS records only you can add at your registrar.

The pattern is the same each time: the agent does the work, and a human keeps the keys to what goes live and what costs money.

How to point an agent at Sitelas

  • For yourself, in claude.ai: add Sitelas from Claude's connector directory — one click. Now every chat can build and run your site.
  • For a headless agent: generate an API key in your Sitelas dashboard and hand it to the agent. Same tools, no chat required.

Either way, the site stays yours — you keep control of what publishes.

The honest version

"An AI agent builds your website" sounds like a demo. The real story is smaller and better. An agent can take a site from one sentence to a live address, then keep it running. You stay in control of the two things that matter: what goes live and what you pay. That's not a magic trick. It's a website that finally lives somewhere an agent can reach.

Questions people ask

Can AI build a website? Yes. Describe your business in a sentence, and the agent picks a design, writes the copy and finds photos. You get a private preview to check before anything goes live.

Can AI run my website after it's built? Yes, the day-to-day part. The same agent reads your form messages, drafts replies and edits pages. It can also check visitor stats on a paid plan.

Will an agent publish my site without asking? No. Every change goes to a private preview first. The agent shows you the preview and asks before it publishes.

Can an agent pay for a plan on my behalf? No. It can hand you a payment link, but a person has to complete it. Your card details never go through the chat.

Try it

Add Sitelas from Claude's connector directory and tell Claude what to build — or start in your browser at sitelas.com.
